Septmeber came quick! Please check the end of the message for upcoming events and dates. As you know your child has started having daily math and weekly spelling homework. I give a spelling pretest to start the week off. Depending on how your child does determines which set of words they are responsible for. I either assign a regular spelling list or a challenge list. I include both on my weekly newsletter and under weekly assignments on the calendar. However, your child will only have the list that they are responsible for glued into their planner for that particular week. This is the list they will use for homework and will be tested on Friday's. I use a website called http://www.spellingcity.com/fallk/. If you access the link the students can choose their list of words and practice them in a fun way. They really do enjoy this and I had great succcess with it last year. They will also use this in the classroom, but I do encourage you to let them on at home.
Every Monday your child will be sent home with a Spelling Tic-Tac Toe board. Please follow the directions on it. It is due Friday. I have posted one as a PDF. The one I posted is not up to date with the weekly spellling words, but your child has those wrods in their planner. If your child loses or ruins it you can print it from here. Each written assignment needs to have a heading on their paper. I made an example and laminated it for each student. It is in their binder in front of their planner. Please make sure it is done like the example.
Each week your child will also be responsible for learning the vocabulary words that go along with our weekly story. I do include this in my reading centers, so they do get practice with them in the classroom, but please make sure you are helping them at home with this. It is included in their weekly reading test they take every Friday.
Some teachers wait to send the daily homework back home until the end of the week in a homework folder.I try and grade it that day and send it back that night. This way you can see what they got right and wrong on the math. The spelling homework I can only grade over the weekend since it gets turned in on Friday.
Please red the comments I have made both on the tic-tac toe sheet and on the actual homework. Each assignment needs its to be on its own piece of lined paper with its own heading. The subject is always going to be spelling for this homework, but the assignment is not tic-tac toe.It is whatever assignment they choose to do, for example, abc order. They need to skip a line and then begin the assignment. For 3 times each please do it as follows:

Skip a line between words. Also, there is an example on the tic-tac toe sheet for pyramid words. Please make sure this is done the exact same way as shown.Let me know if you have any questions.
Grading of homework:Math is graded as a 100 if they did it whether they got any wrong or not.If they skipped a few or did not do an entire side I will mark off for this.If they do not turn in an assignment or turn it in a day late the school’s policy is a grade of 60% one day late and a zero after that.If they are sick they have 3 days to make up all assignments.I then take the 4 assignments that week and average them out to give one grade for the week in math. The same is true for spelling. However, spelling does get graded based on whether the words are spelled correctly and I do take off points if the heading is not done correctly or done at all. Please review your child’s homework and make sure it has all this.It will only help them in the future grades if they do it correctly now.In class we do science work sheets and social studies worksheets out of their activity books.I grade these along with class participation for their grade.
Tests:Every Friday they will have a reading test and spelling test.I send those home on Monday. If your child did not do well I ask that you sign the test to acknowledge that you have seen it and send it back to school. This also gives you a chance to see the test format. It is the same every week.
Please send your child in with a snack even if they buy lunch. Our lunch is not until almost 12:30, so your child is hungry. If you would like to send a snack in for the class to enjoy like pretzels or saltine crackers that would be appreciated. Please remember to keep it healthy, not sticky, and things that don't require utensils.
If you have any questions please contact me at your earliest convenience.
